What is acrylic gloss gel medium?
Gel medium is a transparent acrylic medium (binder + water + acrylic resin) sold without pigment. Mixed into your paint, it extends the volume of paint, slows drying, and adds a glossy finish to the dried film. Used on its own, it can also seal a finished painting with a clear glossy topcoat.
Why would I use it on a paint by numbers kit?
Three main reasons. First, the included paint pots in any kit have a fixed amount; if you run out of a colour, mixing a small drop of gel medium with the paint extends usable volume without changing the colour much. Second, the kit-included acrylics dry quickly, which makes wet-on-wet blending difficult; gel medium slows the drying time and gives you more working time per section. Third, sealing the finished canvas with a thin gel-medium topcoat protects the surface and unifies the gloss level across the painting.
How much should I mix in?
For extending paint volume or adding wet-on-wet blending time: roughly one part gel medium to two parts paint. More gel medium thins the colour. Test on a scrap card before applying to your numbered canvas. For sealing: brush on a thin even layer over the fully dried painting, ideally 72 hours after the last brushstroke so the underlying paint is fully cured.
Does it dry clear?
Yes. Gel medium dries to a transparent gloss film. It does not affect the underlying paint colour beyond a slight intensification of saturation. The dried film resists yellowing for years under normal indoor lighting.
Is it compatible with the acrylic paints in your kits?
Yes. All paint pots included in Paint Kit Studio kits are water-based acrylics, fully compatible with acrylic gloss gel medium. It will also work with most other acrylic paint brands you might already own.
How long does one bottle last?
A typical 16″ × 20″ canvas project uses very little gel medium when used as an extender or blending aid; one bottle covers many kits across that use case. When used as a final sealing coat, one canvas takes roughly 5 to 10 percent of a standard bottle. Most painters keep a single bottle on hand and refill once every several kits.
